December 4, 2019
Allen Thomas filed to run for Lt. Governor of the State of North Carolina on December 4th. Allen Thomas is currently a Hoke County Commissioner, where he has served in that capacity for the past 5 years.
Allen attended East Carolina University where he was initiated into the Eta Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity, Inc in the Spring of 2006.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc was founded on Tuesday, December 4th1906 on the campus of Cornell University. It is a prestigious leadership fraternity and is associated with “The Divine 9 National Pan-Hellenic Council”. Alphas are known to be influential leaders. Notable Alphas include Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Businessman John Johnson, Cornel West, Duke Ellington, Lionel Richie, Omari Hardwick, and Andrew Young to name a few.
Commissioner Allen Thomas has developed a reputation of being a tough fighter for education, working class families, paying workers a living wage, and criminal justice reform. Allen developed his tough yet caring personality as a child, growing up in a one-bedroom apartment with his mom, dad, and sister. His mother was an elementary school teacher and his father battled drug addiction while working odd jobs to provide for his family. When his parents divorced, his mother took on a second job as a cashier at a local grocery store to make ends meet for the family. His mother’s sacrifice fuels his desire to raise teacher pay to the national average in North Carolina.
As an elected official, Commissioner Thomas has been visible and accessible to the residents of Hoke County. He is known as a fighter for “the little man”. After the severe destruction of Hurricane Matthew, Commissioner Thomas successfully fought to allocate $100,000 of county funds to go immediately to food vouchers when the federal government took weeks to approve disaster food stamp benefits. Commissioner Thomas has been through a lot of adversity in life. He knows what it’s like to struggle. His past experiences have molded him into the powerful leader that he is today.
The primary election will be on Tuesday March 3rd. All registered voters living in NC will be able to vote in this race.
